Spiritual Life at Pepperdine

May 3, 2021

Welcome to the Hub for Spiritual Life at Pepperdine

In my inaugural address, I confirmed that "at Pepperdine, we are unapologetically Christian, which means that we invite the world to this open table." Jesus modeled an open-arms approach to life and faith. He was constantly inviting people into his presence. With these convictions, I encouraged us to make our love for Christ and our love for each other prominent and central to every aspect of life at Pepperdine. Accordingly, this past year, the Spiritual Life Team set out to reimagine and enhance spiritual life at Pepperdine and now we are ready to share the new vision with you.

The Spiritual Life Team

It is my pleasure to announce that, beginning August 1, University chaplain Sara Barton will lead Pepperdine's new spiritual life initiatives as associate vice president of spiritual life. In her new role, Sara will lead a newly formed Spiritual Life Team composed of staff and students with demonstrated leadership and who are deeply committed to their personal relationship with Christ and the biblical ethos of Pepperdine. I am also pleased to announce that joining Sara on the Spiritual Life Team with senior leadership roles are associate chaplains Lauren Begert and Rachel Collins. This team is responsible for developing the vision for the Hub for Spiritual Life at Pepperdine and will provide exceptional leadership in the execution of the vision. Additional team members will be added over the course of the summer to support this significantly enhanced emphasis on spiritual life at Pepperdine.

The Hub for Spiritual Life at Pepperdine

The Hub for Spiritual Life is the framework of ministries overseen by the Spiritual Life Team that includes faculty, staff, and student-led ministries that will collaborate to create and sustain a vibrant and exciting worship and spiritual life culture at Pepperdine. The Spiritual Life Team is also restructuring the Convocation program and will be communicating further details about the program later this week.

It is with great excitement and anticipation that we share this vision for an enhanced spiritual life emphasis at Pepperdine as we seek to invest in our students as brilliant leaders of faith, character, courage, and creativity. We hope you will join us in celebrating this vision and collaborating with us in creating a Revelation 7 kingdom community of love and belonging.

After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands. And they were shouting with a great roar,
"Salvation comes from our God who sits on the throne and from the Lamb!"
